When the aggressive black rhino intentionally escaping Nambiti private conservation area was arrested and transferred to a special vehicle to BOMA captive camp, then it’s time we get information from the helicopter saying that they discovered 4 new white rhinoceros having been poached. Two of them died and was cut horns a two others were due to early detection so the poachers had only cut a bigger horn in the front and the smaller one behind remains. Blood is on their faces, the vivid images are transferred from camera on the plane to the mobile device of all the conservation staff.
Immediately our car returned to Weenen conservation from where we were standing over 200km with dizzying speed. Hotel breakfast was prepared early in the morning, but due to focuses on fugitive so this time we had breakfast right on vehicles. Arriving after more than 2 hours, we were told that two rhinos were also cut a horn, blood was still flowing and immediate aid was supplied. Poachers have used anesthetic firearms to shoot and intend to cut the horns, but for some reason they could not have enough time cut horns.
We do not have access to 2 alive rhinos because veterinarians are caring. Two others were dead, they allow us to access them but all cameras, video recorders, phones with camera … were withheld. Dr Simon had to explain to them again that we came here from Vietnam and we are participating into a rhino conservation program. This is a single exception, we are allowed to film and carry the device. Simon also asked us to film or photograph only when he allowed. Finally we were allowed to photograph the scene rhinos take any employees while conducting an autopsy.
Rhino horns are provided by the criminal unions organized in South Africa under many kinds of forms. So to stop trafficking, if the owners of private natural reservations find any rhino horns, all of them are required to register with the government and become a part of a national stockpile of rhino horns. Currently, the wildlife trafficking activities in general, rhinoceros horn in particular became very sophisticated and highly adaptable. There have been many rangers or government officials forced to compromise, corrupted and engaged in trading activities. Among 43 Asians arrests related to rhino crimes in South Africa, there are 24 people from Vietnam (56%), 13 Chinese (28%) and the rest are from Thailand and Malaysia. Among of which have at least three employees of Vietnam embassy in Pretoria had been recorded to smuggle rhino horn. ”
Back to the private sanctuary with an infinite sadness when we witnessed the heartbreaking images of rhino in lled daily and cut horns. I think of the last rhino in Vietnam which was shot dead not long ago and the ranger staff of Cat Tien National Park – Dong Nai has discovered them when the body was decomposed, almost only the bone left. This is the biggest failure of Vietnam conservation sector for failing to protect the last natural heritage of Vietnam. Until one day our children suddenly asked about the rhino in Vietnam, he, his father would only point into the belly and say “it is inside” and not just with the rhinos there are many other species in Vietnam from … large to small, from the river to the sea, from the mountains to the lake … are all on the dish. Perhaps nowhere on earth like Vietnam, a country with a relatively modest area, but there are 5 species are threatened with extinction according to the international report.
Currently these crimes on rhino poaching were the largest crime group, the South African government was considering it as a war and the military are allowed to participate to protect, rangers are allowed to shot poachers dead at the scene of employees performing official duties. Offenders used firearms to kill rhinos are not brutal as illegal hunters who shoot them with anesthetic guns and then cut the horn and let rhinoceros bleed to death in agony. We’ve done our best to protect our rhinos in the country, the mass media every day update the latest information about conservation and rhinoceros numbers killed but they all seem useless if countries such as Vietnam, China continue to trade or use our rhino horns as medicine although they knew that rhino horn can not cure all diseases or at least cancer.
